19 June 2014 – Staten Island

Out of all our previous trips to New York we had never had the chance to go to Staten Island.

We hadn’t really done any research about it nor have any real plans.  Thankfully, we met up with a friend of a friend who happens to be an FDNY Fire Fighter who told us the best time to go would be later afternoon to watch the sun set over Manhattan.

The ferry ride to Staten is free.  You can even buy a beer to enjoy while you enjoy the ride.

Manhattan from Staten Island.

Our FDNY friend was right, it was the best time to go.  The setting sun lit up the city like a Christmas tree.

Sunset over Manhattan.

We found a great restaurant, Ruddy and Dean.  Well, we stumbled upon it really, and decided to give it a go.  It had beer and lots of it from all over the world so it couldn’t be that bad could it.  It didn’t disappoint.  I had wanted a traditional New York cut steak that I had been hearing about and after that meal, I decided I didn’t need a steak from Manhattan.  It was that good.

The ferry ride back to Manhattan was like a light show with the Statue of Liberty and the skyscrapers glowing in the night sky.

The Staten Island Ferry terminal is located at South Ferry, which is at the southern tip of Manhattan in New York City. The New York subway trip planner will help you get there.
