How To Use Evernote As A Notebook

Did you know that Evernote can be used for a lot of different things?  Today I will show you how to use Evernote as a notebook.

There is the argument of an analogue paper notebook versus a digital notebook.  Everyone has at some stage used a paper notebook for school, for work or even a daily journal to just simply writing down the weekly grocery shopping list. Even you and I, right?

When it comes to digital note taking apps you can sometimes be left feeling a little cold.  There is often a real connection between a good pen and the crisp page of a notebook to get the creative mind flowing which is something that a digital notebook may not provide you.

But what if you can have both?

I still capture my thoughts in a paper notebook and digitise them into Evernote forever. Click To Tweet

Digital versus paper?

While a digital note taking app like Evernote is far more versatile than paper, you can still have the best of both worlds. Yay!  For those of you like me who want to create digitised versions of your handwritten notes, Evernote is the ideal option as it captures your physical notes, optimises the image and integrates them into your Evernote notes.

Once your notes are in Evernote, you can store and manage them, annotate them, add ‘Tags’ and even share them with other people.

Essentially, you can preserve your handwritten notes so they are available with you any time, wherever you are and on any of your connected devices.

This is an example of a handwritten entry in my Moleskine notebook being captured by my Evernote camera.  Note: The camera capture setting has been set to Auto so that it automatically detects the document.

Another great feature is the Evernote Post-It note camera feature.  Much in the same way the Evernote camera captured the notebook page above, Evernote can now detect and optimise specially designed Evernote Post-It Notes.  The Evernote camera in automatic mode is one of my favourite features.

This is the Evernote camera that has detected the Post-It Note:

And this is the final optimised Post-It note image:

See how the Evernote camera captures and optimises only the Post-It note?

Conclusion.

So now you really can have your handwritten notes live alongside your notes that you entered digitally. This is how to use Evernote as a notebook. Best of both worlds.

  • Hey David! I love how your post shows the process to scan and digitize your paper notes. The Evernote and Moleskine relationship is really great. In instances where I either would not be comfortable taking my laptop into a meeting, I can still take my Evernote/Moleskine notebook to a meeting and still take notes. I like the features that EN includes with the notebooks, like the stickers and reminders. The business notebook is still the greatest thing ever, because I can segment notes into things I need to take care of and general business notes too. Thanks for the post, David!

    • Thank you Jonathan! I just love the Evernote Molskine smart notebooks. I have not used the Evernote Business notebook myself but would be interested in knowing how it would be used. Thanks for your comment. Cheers.

      • The Moleskine Business notebook is just like a lined Evernote notebook, except that it has two sections, the first is for general business notes and the next is for stuff pertinent to you. When you scan the page you have the option of sharing all the note or just the top half with others.

      • Basically, Business notebooks help keep your individual action items separate from the general notes. It’s a great way to take notes without a computer and still get the benefits of Evernote.

You should explore using smart pens that link to your Evernote account. I’m currently using the Neosmart Pen. I take notes in my Neo Notebook and the pen automatically saves it into EN. Using tags in my Neo Notebook, EN then can save and group it in EN by the tag name. There are still issues, e.g. All notes saved to EN are images, but I’m exploring work arounds. Livescribe is also an option that I will explore next. Looking for a more seamless connection between my physical and digital note worlds and having them combine for ongoing note taking experience.
